Spiders Fall Short In Heartbreaker Against Furman
12/08/2019 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team battled back and forth with Southern Conference favorite Furman but fell one point short 70-69 Sunday at the Robins Center.
"We knew this was going to be a huge test for us today," head coach Aaron Roussell. "I thought this would be a good gauge to where we are. This is a learning process for us and I think once we fix a few things we will start clicking. To have a team like Furman come in here today and this game could have gone either way speaks to our progress."
The Spiders (6-4) drop their first home loss of the season and Furman improved to 6-3 overall with the win. In a wild final minute of play, Richmond had two chances to take the lead but came up empty. The Spiders did make a huge defensive stand as sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) rejected Furman's Tierra Hodges with 6.7 seconds left.
Richmond got fouled with two seconds left but missed both free throws to give Furman the one-point victory. Klimkiewicz lead the team with 17 points and four assists. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) posted 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama) added 10 points off two three-pointers.
The Paladins had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double-figures as Le'Jzae Davidson scored a game-high 18 points, including the eventual game-winning free throws. Davidson gave Furman the lead with three free throws with 1:30 remaining on the clock and no other points were scored.
Richmond finished the game shooting 41.4 percent from the field off 24-for-58. The Spiders had 18 assists on 24 made baskets. Richmond held Furman to just three bench points in the game and had a 20-8 advantage in second chance points.
The game featured 10 lead changes and 15 ties as both teams couldn't race ahead. Richmond's largest lead was six points with 6:34 left in the fourth quarter.
The Spiders got off to a slow start as Furman started the game with a 11-3 lead in the first quarter. The Paladins kept the lead after a three-pointer by Taylor Petty to make the score 18-11. Richmond closed the first quarter with a 6-0 run to get within one point at 18-17.
In the second quarter, the Spiders outscored Furman 23-20 and took a 40-38 halftime lead. Klimkiewicx and Hinds-Clarke each scored five points apiece in the quarter. Richmond had seven offensive rebounds to get the offense going.
Furman came back to even the score at 53-53 after three quarters. The Paladins held Richmond to just 13 third quarter points and only shot 1-for-5 from downtown. Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) had five points and three rebounds in the third quarter.
With 6:34 left, Richmond held a 63-57 lead but Furman would not go away after a 7-0 run capped by a Davidson three-pointer made the score 64-63. All three home games this season have come down to the final possession.
Richmond will return to action in 11 days at the first annual Anne Donovan Classic hosted by Old Dominion from Dec. 19-21. The Spiders will take on Old Dominion on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m.
