Richmond Earns Wire-To-Wire Win Against St. Bonaventure

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team jumped out in front and never looked back in a 57-49, wire-to-wire win against St. Bonaventure, Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The Spiders led for the entire game and picked up a key Atlantic 10 victory against the Bonnies. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double, ending her streak of five in a row. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) played a career-high 39 minutes and led the team in scoring with 14 points. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
Richmond improves to 7-17 overall and is 4-7 in league play. The Spiders also earned their sixth home win of the season. St. Bonaventure falls to 7-17 and is also 4-7 but Richmond holds the tiebreaker with the victory.
The Spiders were locked in from the tip scoring the game's first nine points. It took St. Bonaventure over three minutes to score their first basket. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) and freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to open up a 17-2 lead in the first quarter.
The Bonnies tried to answer cutting the lead to 19-12 off a three-pointer by Deja Francis with a minute on the clock. Freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) made a driving layup to give Richmond a 21-12 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Richmond again came out firing with an 8-0 run thanks to a three-pointer by Parson. The Spiders took a 16-point lead after a made basket from Ruffin with 3:57 remaining in the quarter. Squires hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 35-17 at halftime.
The Bonnies cut into the lead in the third quarter outscoring Richmond 15-10. The Spiders still led 45-32 to enter the fourth quarter. Hinds-Clarke and Duggan made back-to-back baskets late in the third to keep Richmond ahead.
St. Bonaventure quickly hit a three-pointer to start the fourth and continued to make a run after scoring the first nine. With 7:17 left in the game, the Bonnies were within six points at 47-41. Two minutes later, Amanda Oliver scored to make it 47-43 forcing a Richmond timeout.
Hinds-Clarke made one of two free throws and finished a layup inside to give the Spiders a 50-43 advantage with 4:21 on the clock. St. Bonaventure made one last run to get within four points at 53-49 but Richmond went 4-for-4 at the free throw line and made stops on the defensive end to come away victorious.
Richmond finished the game shooting 84.6 percent (11-for-13) from the free throw line. The Spiders also were able to force 19 turnovers for St. Bonaventure, while only committing 10 as a team.
The Spiders will head out on the road for a national tv matchup against Saint Louis on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. on NBC sports network.
