Spiders Drop Road Game At Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team couldn't overcome being outscored 21-4 in the third quarter in a 78-48 road loss at Saint Louis Sunday at Chaifetz Arena.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) scored 11 points off three three-pointers and sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added 10 points with four assists.
Richmond falls to 7-18 overall and is 4-8 in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Louis improves to 13-13 and 8-5 in league action. The Spiders finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (19-for-58) and only 33.3 percent (4-for-12) from the free throw line. The Billikens outrebounded Richmond, 44-29, and scored 30 of their 78 points in the paint.
Saint Louis used a strong second quarter to lead Richmond 39-28 after two quarters. The Billikens outscored the Spiders, 21-12 but Richmond continued to fight despite shooting 33.3 percent (3-for-8) from the free throw line.
Hinds-Clarke had seven points and seven rebounds after two quarters. Ruffin led the team with eight points and Parson added six points.
In the first quarter, the Spiders went on a 9-0 run after Saint Louis scored the first basket of the game. Hinds-Clarke hit a couple of jumpers and Ruffin hit a three-pointer with 6:48 left in the quarter.
The Billikens answered with a quick 7-0 run in less than a minute after a fast break layup by Ciaja Harbison tied the game at 9-9.
Ruffin briefly gave Richmond a 16-15 lead off a three-pointer but Jordyn Frantz nailed a three right back to give Saint Louis a 18-16 first quarter lead.
Saint Louis started the third quarter with a 9-0 and never looked back outscoring Richmond 21-4 to turn an 11-point lead into a 28-point advantage to enter the fourth quarter.
Senior guard Jordyn Frantz scored a career-high 25 points for Saint Louis and hit 4-for-8 from the three-point line.
In the fourth quarter, Hinds-Clarke was able to post her double-double after a made free throw with 7:42 remaining in the game. The Spiders shot 4-for-10 in the final quarter but were still outscored 18-16 by Saint Louis.
The Billikens went 15-for-17 (88.2) from the free throw line and put the pressure on Richmond in front of a large crowd of 5,786.
The Spiders return home for a two-game homestand starting with George Mason on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
