02/15/2019 | Baseball
Seven of the nine starters in the Richmond lineup recorded a hit, led by a trio of three-hit performances. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) each finished 3-for-5 and Forte added the pop with a double, a home run and four RBI. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) added a 3-for-6 performance with a home run and drove in three runs. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.), in his first collegiate competition, had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) added a two-hit game from the lead-off spot, scoring once and driving in a run. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) and Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) each added a hit, an RBI and scored once.
Redshirt sophomore Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started the season opener for the second-straight season. Miller went 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out six. First on in relief was Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) who went 0.2 innings before giving way to Dalton Light. Light went the next 2.2 innings, retiring 10-straight batters before Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) made his first appearance of the season. Looney earned the win, going 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three hitters.
Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings of Friday's opener. The Spiders got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. After a single from Plantier led off the inning, a couple of fielder's choices and an error landed Bruhl at second base with one out. Forte turned on an inside pitch and launched the first home run of the 2019 season to right field to give Richmond the 2-0 lead.
Georgia State quickly answered in the bottom of the fourth frame. After a lead-off walk put a runner on, Ryan Glass connected for a home run to center field to tie the game back at 2-2.
The Panthers took advantage of a couple free passes to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. A one-out walk followed by a two-out single and a walk loaded the bases before Kalen Puckett drew another walk to bring in the go-ahead run.
The Spiders got the to Georgia State bullpen and took full advantage. The eighth inning saw Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) and Little draw back-to-back walks to start the frame. After a bunt hit from Schulefand, Lee drove a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly to tie the game up. Plantier followed and connected on his first home run of the season, a three-run blast to give the Spiders a 6-3 advantage.
Georgia State rallied in its final chance, scoring three runs in the ninth inning. Two walks put runners on with two outs. Daino Deas drove a pitch to right center field for a triple. The relay throw to try to get him going to third was wild and Deas was able to score to tie the game up at six each.
Richmond responded in its very next at bat, scoring seven runs on seven hits and taking full advantage of a pair of Panther errors. Lee and Plantier led off with back-to-back singles before Bruhl reached on a bunt base hit. Forte barreled up another pitch to drive a double off the base of the wall to score two. Schmidt added an RBI single and Little connected on a two RBI double to extend the Spider lead.
Looney shut it down in the bottom of the tenth, striking out a pair of hitters to close out the win.
Richmond is back in action tomorrow at noon as it will take on the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets at noon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
