Third-Quarter Run Seals Richmond Loss At UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team was outscored 18-8 in the third quarter and fell on the road at the University of Massachusetts, 64-38, Wednesday night at Mullins Center. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) led the team with 14 points.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J) had six points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Richmond falls to 8-20 overall and is 5-10 in Atlantic 10 conference play with one game remaining. UMass improves to 14-15 overall and 6-9 in league action.
The Spiders were outrebounded 41-23 by UMass and committed 14 turnovers in the loss. Richmond shot just 32.7 percent (16-for-49) and only shot 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from the three-point line.
UMass was led by Jessica George who finished with 15 points off 5-for-8 shooting from downtown. Destiney Philoxy added 11 points and Jessica Nelson scored 10.
Both teams made runs but UMass came away with a 27-23 halftime lead. Hinds-Clarke had six points and grabbed three rebounds after two quarters. Holt led the team with eight points off two three-pointers.
UMass started the game with a three-pointer from Vashnie Perry but freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) answered with a three. Perry hit her second three-pointer but again the Spiders tied the game at 6-6 after a Holt three-pointer.
With 1:49 remaining in the quarter, UMass built a 18-10 advantage after a layup from Jessica Nelson. Hinds-Clarke responded with two-straight baskets, including a layup at the buzzer to keep Richmond close at 18-14.
The Spiders opened the second quarter with stellar defense holding UMass scoreless for the first four minutes. Richmond went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-18 lead off a layup from Hinds-Clarke at the 6:10 mark.
The Minutewomen went on a 9-0 capped off by a Hailey Leidel three-pointer with a minute left in the second to go ahead 27-21. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) held for the last shot and got fouled making both free throws to cut the lead to 27-23 after two quarters.
In the third quarter, Richmond was within three points at 30-27 off a layup by sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) but UMass went on a run to pull away. UMass outscored the Spiders 18-8 in the third quarter and led 45-31 to enter the fourth quarter.
The Spiders only scored seven points in the final quarter as UMass cruised to a 64-38 victory. UMass scored 19 points in the fourth and finished the game with 18 assists.
The Spiders will head home for the Atlantic 10 regular season finale against George Washington on Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m. inside the Robins Center.
