Squires Sparks Richmond Win Against George Washington, 56-48

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team received a career-high 10 points from freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) in a 56-48 victory against George Washington Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center. With the win, Richmond will enter the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament as the No. 11 seed.
Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) finished with 10 points, scoring in double-figures for the fourth straight game. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J) scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Classmate Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) added six points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
Richmond finishes the A-10 regular season with a 6-10 record and is 9-20 overall. George Washington falls to 10-19 overall and is 7-9 in A-10 play.
The Spiders had one of their best defensive efforts holding George Washington under 50 points at 48 and forced 13 turnovers by the Colonials. GW shot 35.7 (20-for-56) and just 1-for-5 from the free throw line.
Richmond maintained their lead with a strong third quarter outscoring George Washington, 17-15. The Colonials did make a run in the third cutting the lead to 28-26 off a three-pointer by Kelsi Mahoney with 6:44 on the clock. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) hit a jumper to push the lead to five points. The Spiders lead was trimmed to four points at 31-28 with 3:25 left in the third. Richmond closed the quarter with a 10-5 run thanks to five points from Squires.
In the final quarter, George Washington got within three points on multiple occasions but the Spiders answered each time. With 6:44 remaining, GW's Neila Luma hit a jumper to cut the lead to 47-44 but Hinds-Clarke scored on a fast break layup to make it 49-44.
Junior Jayana Ervin (Tacoma, Wash.) made a clutch basket down the stretch and Holt made a dagger layup with 1:15 on the clock. Spiders held George Washington to two points in the final four minutes to come away with their eighth home win of the season.
Richmond played stellar defense in the first two quarters holding George Washington to 18 points and forced seven turnovers. The Colonials only shot 25.0 percent (7-for-28) but kept the game close only trailing 24-18.
The Spiders were led by Duggan who scored six points (two three-pointers) and grabbed six rebounds. Holt had five points and two assists at halftime. Ervin added four points.
In the first quarter, Richmond took an early 4-0 lead but George Washington tied the game at 6-6 after a 6-2 run. The Colonials went ahead 10-8 but freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) hit a three-pointer to give Richmond a 11-10 lead. Carpenter missed a three-pointer at the end of the quarter but the Spiders led 11-10.
The Spiders will learn their opponent in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament later today with the game being played on Tuesday, March 5.
