Richmond Drops Road Game At Dayton

DAYTON, OHIO – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had a tough second quarter falling 71-50 against Dayton Wednesday night at the University of Dayton arena. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) posted her seventh double-double of the season and fourth in a row.
Hinds-Clarke finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) had seven points and dished out five assists. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) added six points.
Richmond falls to 6-16 overall, 3-6 in the Atlantic 10 with the loss. Dayton improves to 12-8 and 7-2 in league play. The Spiders struggled from the three-point line going 2-for-20 and only shot 30.9 percent from the field. Richmond was outrebounded by the Flyers, 46-29.
In the first quarter, Richmond took an early 2-0 lead after two free throws by junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.). The Spiders took a 5-4 lead after a three-pointer by Parson with six minutes left in the quarter.
Dayton led 11-8 after a fast-break layup from Jenna Giacone at the 3:17 mark. Ruffin made two free throws to close the gap to 11-10. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) made a driving layup and Parson made a jumper to tie the game at 14-14 to end the first quarter.
Foul trouble was an issue in the second quarter as Hinds-Clarke, Carpenter and freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass) picked up two fouls. Also the Spiders were 1-for-11 from downtown after two quarters and were outrebounded 31-14 by the Flyers.
Dayton outscored Richmond 27-6 in the second quarter thanks to a couple of big runs. The Flyers went on a 10-2 run and closed the quarter with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 41-20 lead after two quarters.
Both teams played even in the third quarter as Richmond and Dayton tied 18-18. Hinds-Clarke had her best quarter with 10 points. With 2:20 remaining in the third quarter, freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) hit a corner three-pointer to cut the lead to 54-36 but the Spiders couldn't get any closer.
In the final quarter, Richmond and Dayton tied again at 12-12. The Spiders played the Flyers even in three of the four quarters but a tough second quarter proved to be the difference in the loss.
With 2:32 left in the game, Hinds-Clarke grabbed her 10th rebound to secure her fourth double-double in a row.
Dayton scored 42 bench points in the game, while the Spiders only had six points from their bench.
The Spiders will face VCU for part two of the Sonabank/P.O.W.E.R Crosstown Showdown on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at the Siegel center.
