Spiders Fall On The Road At VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team went cold in the final two quarters only scoring three points in the fourth in a 58-37 road loss at VCU Saturday night at the Siegel Center.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) posted her eighth double-double of the season and fifth in a row with 10 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Hinds-Clarke had 14 defensive rebounds and her 19 rebounds is tied for ninth best in a single-game in school history.
Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) added nine points and freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored 10 points off the bench.
Richmond falls to 6-17 overall, 3-7 in the Atlantic 10 with the loss. VCU sits atop the A-10 standings with a 10-1 record and is 18-6 on the season. The Spiders had one of its worst shooting nights on the season shooting just 28.6 percent and only hit 1-for-20 from the three-point line. Richmond also went just 4-for-12 from the free throw line (33.3 percent).
The Spiders were outscored 28-10 in the third and fourth quarters reminiscence of the first game against VCU on Jan. 12. Madison Hattix-Covington led the Rams with 13 points and Taya Robinson scored eight points.
Carpenter started the game 4-for-4 and led the team with nine points to help Richmond trail by just three points 30-27 after two quarters. Ruffin and Hinds-Clarke each scored seven points apiece.
The Spiders took an early 5-3 lead off a layup by Ruffin with 5:21 left in the first quarter. Carpenter scored five points, including a layup to pull ahead 10-7.
VCU tied the game at 12-12 after a three-pointer by Madison Hattix-Covington with under a minute on the clock. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) came away with a steal and Carpenter followed her miss to give Richmond a 14-12 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, VCU went on a 7-0 run to take a 26-20 lead capped by two free throws from Hattix-Covington. Ruffin got the Spiders closer with a layup plus a foul to cut the lead to 28-25 with 2:01 remaining in the second.
Hinds-Clarke hit a baseline jumper with under a minute left in the quarter to make the score 30-27 after two quarters. Hinds-Clarke led the team with nine rebounds after two quarters.
Freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) scored to start the third quarter cutting VCU's lead to 30-29 but the Rams responded. VCU went back up 39-30 after a 9-1 run capped by a layup from Tera Reed. Richmond would only score four points the rest of the quarter as VCU lead 45-34 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, the Spiders only managed three points and were 1-for-17 from the field. Hinds-Clarke grabbed six rebounds in the fourth to put her final total at 19 rebounds.
Up next, the Spiders will host St. Bonaventure in their annual Pink Game on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
