BLACKSBURG, Va. – Richmond baseball fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies 10-1 Wednesday night at English Field at Union Park on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Spiders scored in the first inning, but allowed the Hokies to score multiple runs in the first and eighth innings for the decisive victory. Richmond falls to 8-4. Virginia Tech improves to 11-5 with the win.
Five Spiders took the hill Wednesday night. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) got the ball to start, going 1.2 innings allowing five runs, four earned before giving way to Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.). Morrison tossed 3.1 innings, allowing one run scattering four hits, and striking out four. Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) came on for 0.2 innings. Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) came on to work in a bases loaded situation, getting a strikeout before striking out to more in his next full inning of work. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) recorded an out in the final inning before Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) finished it out by getting a ground ball double play.
The Spider offense had six players record hits as Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) drove in the only Richmond run of the game.
Richmond got on the board in the top of the first inning. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) singled and moved to third after a Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) single and an Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) fielder's choice. Bruhl lifted an outside pitch to left field for a single to drive in Lee and give the Spiders an early lead.
The Hokies responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame, plating five runs, all with two outs. After retiring the first two hitters of the frame, a hit by pitch, a single and a walk loaded the bases. An RBI single from Tanner Thomas drove in two, before a two-RBI double from Nick Owens plated two more. A single to the outfield moved a runner to third, but the ground ball was mishandled, allowing a run to score and the Hokies to go up 5-1.
Virginia Tech added a solo run in the bottom of the fifth before adding four more runs in their final at bat.
The Spiders are back in action this weekend as they host the Quinnipiac Bobcats, Toledo Rockets and the Bryant Bulldogs in the Spider Invitational. First pitch of the neutral site game Friday is set for 10 a.m. Richmond will take the field against Bryant at 2 p.m.
