Baseball Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Bryant
03/15/2019 | Baseball
Richmond's bullpen locked it down over the final three innings as Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) earned his first win of the season. Light threw 1.2 innings without allowing a run and struck out three. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) shut down the ninth inning, recording a strikeout to earn his second save.
Redshirt sophomore Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started his first game in two weeks on the bump after last weekend's rainout at Davidson. Miller went 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs, walked three and struck out three. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) was first on in relief, going 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three before giving way to Light.
Six Spiders earned hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-5 performance from Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) with a run scored. Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) and Little finished with a pair of hits each and Little drove in three runs. Schulefand's lone hit was the long ball, but he was consistent at the plate, driving in five runs in the victory. The Spider offense drew nine walks in the win, including three form senior catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) who finished 1-for-1 with an RBI and scored twice.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, using two singles and a three-run home run in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Another two-run home run in the second inning put Bryant up 5-0.
Richmond rallied in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) pulled a single down the right field line to ignite the rally. Bruhl pushed a single to the opposite field and Forte went first to third to put runners on the corners. Schmidt followed with another sharply hit single to left field to score the first run. Meyer drew a walk to load the bases as Little singled through the right side to drive in another. Schulefand reached on a fielder's choice, allowing another run to score and cutting the lead to 5-3.
Bryant doubled up its lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run from Sam Owens.
Richmond again rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. With two outs, Meyer and Davis Payne (Rexford, N.Y.) drew walks and Little singled to score one and put runners on the corners. Schulefand provided the big moment of the inning, hammering a home run to left field to score three and tie the game.
The Spiders took their first lead of the game after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) started the frame with a hit by pitch, and Bruhl poked a single to shallow center field. A walk to Schmidt loaded the bases for Meyer, who worked a full count before singling to right field to score the go-ahead run. Little and Schulefand drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to score three and give the Spiders the 10-7 lead.
Bryant added a run in the top of the ninth, but Looney struck out the final hitter of the game to earn the save.
Richmond is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as it'll face the Toledo Rockets at Pitt Field.
