RICHMOND, Va. – After a tough second inning, Richmond pitching locked down a tough Toledo Rocket lineup Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field to earn its 10th win of the season. The Spiders gave up a home run in the top of the second, but didn't allow the Rockets to score in any of their other eight chances. The Richmond offense put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead and earn the win. The Spiders improve to 10-4 on the season, while Toledo falls to 8-9.
Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) started on the mound. The junior threw 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits, four earned runs, walked five and tied a career-high with five strikeouts. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) was the first reliever used, shutting down the Rockets over the next 2.0 innings allowing just one hit. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) earned his first win of the season, going the final 3.0 innings, scattering two hits and a walk to go with a strikeout.
At the plate, the top of the order proved to be trouble for Toledo pitching. Leadoff man Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) finished with two hits each. Lee was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, a home run, and drew two walks, reaching base in all four plate appearances. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) added a 1-for-3 performance and drove in a team-high three runs. Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) hit his first home run of the season to add some insurance late in the game.
The Spiders jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning after Lee took a 1-0 pitch over the wall for his first home run of the season to put Richmond up 1-0.
Toledo took advantage of a couple free bases and connected on a grand slam to take the lead at 4-1 in the second inning.
Richmond cut the lead down to one in the bottom of the third. After Schulefand reached on a fielder's choice and Lee drew a walk, Plantier worked an eight-pitch at bat, fouling off four pitches before dropping a single to center field. The runners were off with the pitch and Lee came all the way around from first to score.
UR took advantage of the Rockets struggle on the mound in the seventh inning, working some quality at bats. Davis Payne (Rexford, N.Y.) led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) drew a walk and Schulefand laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Lee worked a tough at bat and drew a walk to bring in the tying run. Plantier followed by lifting a fly ball to center field deep enough to score the go-ahead run and put Richmond up. Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) added to the lead in the eighth, leading off with a solo home run to left center.
Toledo managed just five base runners over the final seven innings, with no inning see more than two runners reach base. Schmidt recorded a key caught stealing in the fourth inning.
Richmond wraps up the Spider Invitational tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
