Baseball Closes the Spider Invitational with a Loss to Quinnipiac
03/17/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Spider baseball competed in the final game of the Spider Invitational Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Richmond scored a couple runs early, but several defensive miscues sunk the Spiders' attempt to finish the weekend undefeated. The Spiders dropped the final game by a 6-5 tally as the comeback attempt in the final innings came up just short. Richmond falls to 10-5 on the season.
Redshirt senior Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) started the contest, going 5.2 innings, scattering four hits, four runs, one earned and struck out three. Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) worked a career-best 3.1 innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and struck out a career-high four hitters.
The Spider offense knocked out seven hits in the contest, led by two-hit performances from Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) who each finished 2-for-4. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs, two walks and a home run.
The Spiders took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Forte connected on a lead-off home run to center field to take the 1-0 lead. Forte doubled up the lead the next inning, drawing a bases loaded walk to score another and double the Richmond lead.
Quinnipiac was advantageous in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three unearned runs. The Bobcats were aided by a pair of Richmond errors, two hit batters and two walks to go with a pair of base hits to drive in three runs and give Quinnipiac the 3-2 lead.
The Bobcats added a run in the top of the sixth inning. A lead-off double and a stolen base from Evan Vulgamore put a runner on third and a ground out to third allowed him to score to put Quinnipiac up 4-2. The Bobcats added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the 6-2 lead.
Michael Strait (Cumming, Ga.) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit single and moved up after a balk. Strait moved up to third after the Quinnipiac catcher tried to get him at second but he was awarded third base due to a fielder's interference. A ground ball from Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) brought Strait in and cut the lead down to 6-3.
Richmond mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the eighth inning after Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) led off with a single and moved up after a Forte walk. A ground out put them in scoring position for pinch hitter Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas). Schmidt hit into a fielder's choice to bring one run in, and a passed ball with Forte on third cut the lead down to one. Richmond got the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but couldn't find the hit it needed and left him stranded.
Richmond returns to the field tomorrow afternoon as they'll host the Princeton Tigers at 3 p.m. at Pitt Field.
