Schaub's First Career Home Run Lifts Baseball Over Princeton
03/18/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – After surrendering the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, Richmond baseball got the answer it needed from freshman designated hitter Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.). Schaub connected for his first career hit, a two-run home run which gave the Spiders the 2-1 lead over the visiting Princeton Tigers at Pitt Field Monday afternoon. Richmond improves to 11-5 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-9.
Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) started his first game of the season on the mound. The junior went 4.0 innings, scattering four hits, striking out seven hitters in the process before giving way to the bullpen. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) earned the win in relief, going the next 3.2 innings, allowing an unearned run to go with two strikeouts. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) finished the final 1.1 innings, striking out two and earning his team-high third save of the season.
The Richmond offense earned four hits in the contest, none louder than the two-run blast from Schaub. Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) added a double, an RBI and scored once. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) both finished with a hit. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) added an RBI.
Princeton scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Back-to-back walks led off the inning. Jake Boone ground to the Richmond third baseman who stepped on the bag for the force out, but the throw to try to get the runner at first was wild, moving runners to second and third. Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) recorded the second out, ranging to his left from his second base spot and rifling a throw home where Schmidt picked it and applied the tag on the attempted runner. Richmond's luck ran out the next batter as David Harding singled to left field to put the Tigers up 1-0.
The Spiders responded in the bottom of the frame. Schmidt laced a double down the third base line and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt. Schaub hammered his first career hit, a two-run home run, over the left field wall to put Richmond up 2-1 after five innings of play.
The Spiders added a pair of insurance runs the next inning. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) drew a lead-off walk and stole second before being lifted for a pinch runner. A single from Forte put runners on the corners for Bruhl who drove a run in on a fielder's choice. Schmidt lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly to bring in the fourth run and put Richmond up 4-1.
Over the final two innings, Princeton put four runners on, but Spider pitching did what it did all day, and got out of the jam and stranded runners on base. Princeton finished the day with 12 Tigers left on base as the Spider pitching staff struck out 11 hitters.
The Spiders return to Pitt Field Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they'll host the Monmouth Hawks.
