Baseball Takes Both in Doubleheader with Rider
03/02/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball swept its third doubleheader of the season Saturday at Pitt Field. Game one of the twinbill with the Rider Broncs started at 9:30 a.m. as the Spiders went on to win 6-1 and took the nightcap 10-1 to improve to 8-1 on the young season. Rider drops to 2-6 with the two losses. The Richmond bullpen shined on a brisk Saturday as nine pitchers combined to allow just two runs in 18 innings of play.
The Spider offense was steady throughout the doubleheader, led by leadoff man Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) Schulefand finished the day 5-of-7 with four runs scored, two walks and a stolen base. Schulefand's offense wasn't the only part of his game that shined on a cloudy afternoon. The sophomore made several outstanding defensive plays in right field during the two games to help lead the Spiders to victory.
Senior utility man Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) finished 3-for-6 in two games with two runs scored. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) closed the afternoon 3-for-9 with five RBI, all coming in the nightcap, four of which came on a grand slam in the fourth inning to break open a close game. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) drove in four runs on the day, with Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) adding a three-RBI day.
Richmond used five pitchers to earn the win in the first game. Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) got the start, going 2.2 innings with a strikeout. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) was first put of the bullpen, using just two pitches to record the final out of the third inning. Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) was next on, working a scoreless fourth frame. Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) was next on, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out a hitter to earn the win. Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) earned his first career save, closing out the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit.
The nightcap saw senior Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) get his second career start. Light tossed 3.0 innings, striking out three and allowing a run before giving way to the bullpen. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) earned the win in relief, going 3.0 innings surrendering just one hit and a strikeout. Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) tossed two innings in relief, striking out two. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) closed the day out, working in the ninth inning and picking up a strikeout.
Rider drew first blood in the opening frame of Saturday's doubleheader. After the lead-off hitter was struck by a pitch, he went first to third after a single from Brennan McAllister. A passed ball got by the Richmond catcher allowing an unearned run to score to take the early lead.
The Spiders responded in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out rally. Bruhl got it going with a walk, before a single from Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) put a runner in scoring position. Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) singled through the left side to bring in a run and tie the game.
Another two-out rally helped Richmond take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. After an error put a runner on, Schulefand singled to put two on. Lee pushed a double down the third baseline to bring in a pair and give the Spiders the 3-1 lead.
Lee added another RBI in the bottom of the seventh. Meyer and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) each singled to start the inning and moved up after a Schulefand sacrifice bunt. Lee drove a ball to right field that was deep enough to score one and put Richmond up 4-1. The Spiders added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with RBI hits from Schmidt and Little.
Game two started similar to game one as Rider pushed one across in the opening frame. Jack Peterson doubled with a runner on second for the Bronc run.
The Spiders countered in their half of the first. Schulefand singled and swiped second with two outs. Forte blooped a single to left field to drive in a run and tie it up at one each. Richmond took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair of runs. Infield hits from Schulefand and a bunt single from Lee drove in two and put Richmond up 3-1.
Richmond broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth. After two walks and a single loaded the bases, Plantier delivered one run with a single and kept the bases loaded. Forte did the damage, driving a home run over the fence in right center to give the Spiders a commanding 8-1 lead.
UR added two runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a two-run triple from Meyer.
The Spiders and Broncs are scheduled to finish the series tomorrow at Pitt Field beginning at noon.
