03/24/2019 | Baseball
Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) suffered the loss on the hill, going 5.0 innings, allowing six runs, four earned and striking out five hitters. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) was first on in relief, going 1.1 innings allowing just one hit. Fellow freshman Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) was next on, going 1.2 innings, striking out a pair without giving up a run. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) worked the ninth inning, picking up a strikeout.
The Spider offense pounded out 12 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-4 performance from Little. Little finished with the home run, three RBI and a run scored. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) each added multi-hit efforts and each scored a run. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) and Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) drove in a run with a hit each.
Marist took an early lead for the second-straight day, scoring a pair of unearned runs. After the lead-off hitter reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and a walk put two runners on. A single drove in two and the Spiders were down 2-0 after the first half inning.
The Spiders took the lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Cook singled to ignite the rally, with Forte doubling to put runners in scoring position. Schaub singled to drive in the first run before Little ran a pitch out of the yard to drive in three and put Richmond up 4-2.
The Red Foxes answered in the next frame with a solo home run from Brian Hart to cut the lead to 4-3. Marist tied the contest in the top of the fifth on a Frankie Gregoire RBI single, before Robbie Armitage put the Red Foxes up with a home run to left field.
Richmond cut into the lead with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Schulefand was hit by a pitch before coming around to score after Bruhl hammered a double off the wall in right center to cut the lead to 6-5.
Marist used a pair of home runs in the top of the ninth inning to double up the Spiders and take the game 10-5.
The Spiders are back in action this Wednesday as they'll make the trip to Charlottesville for a matchup with the Virginia Cavaliers at 4 p.m.
