Senders Picks Up His First Strikeout in Loss at Virginia
03/27/2019 | Baseball
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) worked a scoreless inning in relief and struck out his hitter Wednesday night at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park. The freshman made his appearance in the 5-1 loss to the Virginia Cavaliers, but held the Virginia lineup scoreless in his inning of work. Richmond falls to 11-9-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 15-10.
Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) started his second game of the season on the hill, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two earned and struck out a pair. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) came on in relief, finishing the fourth inning after allowing a hit. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) worked a clean inning with a strikeout. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) worked the sixth with a pair of strikeouts. Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) went 0.2 innings with a couple strikeouts and Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) struck out his only batter of the seventh before Senders did his work in the final inning.
The Spider offense managed just five hits in the contest, led by a 2-for-4 performance from Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.), Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) recorded the other hits for the Richmond offense as all five hits were singles.
The Spiders took advantage of a couple walks to take the lead. In the second inning, Schmidt and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) drew back-to-back walks before a well-executed sacrifice bunt moved the pair into scoring position. Hipsman chopped a ball to third base, allowing Schmidt to score and the Spiders to take the lead.
Richmond's lead was short-lived as the Cavaliers responded with a pair of runs in their half of the second inning. With two outs, an infield single and a walk put runners on first and second. UVA's nine-hole hitter singled up the middle to drive in a run before a double from Tanner Morris drove in the second run to put Virginia up 2-1 after two innings.
Virginia extended its lead two innings later, plating a trio of unearned runs. With two outs, a single to the shortstop and a walk put two on. Zack Gelof hit into what looked to be the third out of the inning, but the Spider defense couldn't handle the ground ball and the bases were loaded. A wild pitch scored the first run of the frame before Cameron Simmons dropped a Texas-leaguer into no-man's land in shallow right field to score two more.
Both bullpens took control over the next four and a half innings as neither team surrendered a run.
The Spiders are back in action this weekend as they host the George Mason Patriots in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Pitt Field. The Spiders and Patriots will play Friday night at 3 p.m., Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and close the series Sunday at noon.
