Baseball Opens A-10 Play With a Dominating 15-2 Win Over George Mason
03/29/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) led off Friday night's Atlantic 10 Conference opener with a home run and the Spiders never looked back, defeating the George Mason Patriots dominating fashion, 15-2. The Spider offense homered six times, twice by both Schulefand and freshman designated hitter Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.). The Spiders snapped a five-game winless streak with the win and improve to 12-9-1 on the season and 1-0 in A-10 play. George Mason falls to 11-13 and 0-4 in league action.
Not to be overshadowed, redshirt sophomore Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) was terrific on the mound. Miller threw 7.0 shutout innings, tying a career-high with eight strikeouts and earned the win. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) worked two innings in relief, giving up a pair of runs and striking out two.
The Spider offense banged out 21 hits in the contest, the second time this season the offense has combined to go over the 20-hit plateau. All nine starters had at least one hit in the victory, as Schulefand led the way with a 4-for-6 game with two home runs, a double, two RBI and scored three runs. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) added a 3-for-5 game with an RBI and scored twice. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored, a home run and two doubles. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) added three hits, a team-high four RBI, scored twice and one home run. Schaub finished with two hits, both home runs, driving in three and scoring three times in a 2-for-4 performance.
Richmond jumped on George Mason pitching in the first inning, scoring five runs. Schulefand started the game off with a solo home run, the first time a Spider has done that since Kyle Adams did against George Washington in 2016. Bruhl singled before Plantier hammered a two-run homer to right center to put the Spiders up 3-0. A walk to Forte and a single from Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) put runners on the corners for D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.). Lee hit a ground ball past the first baseman to drive in a run and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) chopped a single through the right side to extend the lead to 5-0 after the first inning.
Schaub added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth, connecting on his third home run of the season to extend the lead out to 6-0 in favor of the Spiders.
Richmond tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Schulefand ignited the rally with a double and took third after the centerfielder couldn't handle the ball in the gap. Bruhl drove in the first run with a single, before a Plantier double put two on. Forte hammered his team-leading fourth home run to center field to put the Spiders up 10-0. Forte added another run on an RBI single in the next inning to extend the lead to 11-0.
Home runs from Schaub and Schulefand in the bottom of the eighth extended the lead out to 14-2, and a balk with a runner on third brought in the final run.
The Spiders and Patriots are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in the second game of the series at Pitt Field
