Offensive Explosion Late Leads Baseball to Series Win Over George Mason
03/30/2019 | Baseball
Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) turned in a career day at the plate as the freshman finished 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, a game-high seven RBI with grand slam. D.J. Lee (Frankfort Ill.) added a 1-for-3 effort with three RBI, two runs scored and a double, Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.), Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla) and Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) each had multiple hits, drove in two runs and homered in the contest. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) added a two-RBI effort with a 1-for-3 performance.
Seven pitchers combined for the win. Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) got the start, going 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs before giving way to the bullpen. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) was first out of the bullpen, working 1.1 innings, retiring all four hitters he faced. Freshman Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) earned his first win of his collegiate career, going 1.2 hitless innings and striking out three hitters.
Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) worked 1.1 innings, allowing an earned run on one hit to go with two strikeouts. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) worked 0.2 innings, allowing a run with a strikeout. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) struck out the only hitter he faced and Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) worked a clean ninth inning.
Richmond scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Forte and Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) led the inning off with back-to-back singles before Lee moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Cook drove in Forte with a sacrifice fly to put Richmond up early.
George Mason took its first lead of the series in the top of the third, plating a pair of unearned runs. An error led off the inning before a fielder's choice put two on. The Patriot cleanup hitter drove a double off the wall in right center to drive in two and put George Mason up 2-1.
Richmond tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally. Schaub singled up the middle and moved to second after a wild pitch. Schulefand singled to left field to bring Schaub in and tie it at two.
Plantier and Forte put the Spiders up 4-2 in the fifth with back-to-back solo home runs.
George Mason cut the lead down to one in the top of the seventh after Brady Acker hit his first home run of the season.
The Spiders exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Richmond sent 16 hitters to the plate. Back-to-back walks to Schmidt and Lee started the rally before a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Schaub. Schaub singled and drove in a pair. A hit batter and RBI singles from Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) and Plantier extended the lead. Forte drew a walk to load the bases and Lee hammered a bases-clearing double off the top of the wall in right center. Two more walks loaded the bases for Schaub who hit his fifth home run of the season, his first grand slam of his career and just the second grand slam for the Spiders this season. Schulefand followed with a solo homer of his own to extend the lead to 17-4. The Spiders tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth in the victory.
The Spiders and Patriots are back in action tomorrow at noon as the Spiders will look for the sweep of the three-game series.
