Men’s Lacrosse Suffers First SoCon Loss Of The Year At Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team suffered its first Southern Conference loss of the season on its longest road trip of the year as the Spiders dropped a 14-7 contest to Air Force Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. The loss drops the Spiders into a three-way tie atop the SoCon standings at 4-1 in league play, tied with both Air Force and High Point.
The Spiders concluded their four-game road swing with the loss Saturday and returns home for the final time in the regular season next weekend. Richmond will host Mercer next Saturday at Robins Stadium with face-off set for 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Spiders will hold their Senior Day festivities.
Richmond (7-5, 4-1 SoCon) started well enough against the Falcons, taking a 2-1 lead at the 7:17 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) opened the scoring with his 37th of the season and Austin Reid (Clinton, Conn.) added his first of the season for the early advantage.
Air Force (8-4, 4-1 SoCon) came right back and scored seven-straight goals, taking an 8-2 lead into the halftime break. The Falcons had everything going for them, even scoring a goal a man-down during the stretch and Matthew Schwartz scored four of the Falcons' first eight goals.
Richmond opened the second half with some positive momentum, scoring the first two goals to make it an 8-4 contest. Senior Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) scored his 26th of the season and Lanchbury added his second of the game to narrow the gap to four goals.
Air Force answered back with five-straight goals, taking a 13-4 lead into the fourth. Sophomore Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) would add a goal in the fourth while Hatfield and Lanchbury rounded out the scoring with man-up goals late in the game for the 14-7 margin. The final goal by Lanchbury extended his Richmond scoring record to 39 goals this year.
