
Spiders Drop Back-And-Forth Contest In Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team played a back-and-forth battle with Atlantic 10 foe UMass, but the Minutewomen capitalized in overtime, scoring to take a 13-12 win on Sunday afternoon in Amherst, Mass.

Katie Sciandra led the way with a season-high six goals for the Spiders, while Sam Geiersbach and Madison Ostrick also posted multi-goal performances. Goalkeeper Megan Gianforte matched her season high with 14 saves in cage.

Sciandra started the scoring in the second minute of play, but neither team was able to pull away early. The Spiders jumped out to a 5-2 lead, their largest of the game, with goals from Ostrick, Geiersbach, Sciandra and Julia Schmuckler, before UMass went on a three-goal run to tie the game with just over five minutes to play in the half. Sciandra and Geiersbach rounded out the first-half scoring to give Richmond a two-goal advantage at the break.

UMass came out strong in the second half, scoring the opening three goals to take its first lead of the day. Sciandra and Geiersbach each scored to regain the lead for the Spiders, but another pair of goals from the Minutewomen made it 10-9 in favor of the hosts with 20 minutes to play.

Sciandra and Ostrick answered with goals, but UMass scored twice more for the one-goal advantage. Sciandra rounded out the scoring in regulation with her sixth of the day, but neither team managed to score in the final 9:13, sending the teams into overtime for the second-straight meeting.

UMass won the opening draw in the overtime and tallied the man-up goal for the win just over a minute into the period.

The Spiders outshot the Minutewomen, 39-33, taking a 29-27 advantage in shots on goal. Richmond also forced UMass into 18 turnovers and won the ground ball battle, 24-14. Brittney Wright led the Spiders with four ground balls to go along with her first career assist.

Richmond will now return home for their regular-season finale and Senior Game, hosting Saint Joseph's on Friday, April 19. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
