McGuigan Dominates the Bonnies as Baseball Takes Series
04/28/2019 | Baseball
OLEAN, N.Y. – Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) kept the St. Bonaventure bats as cold as the weather in Olean Sunday afternoon as the Spider starter went 8.0 innings to earn the win, 9-3. The Richmond offense responded after being shutout in the nightcap of yesterday's doubleheader with nine runs on 11 hits. First pitch of Sunday's finale saw a temperature dip to crisp 37 degrees as the southern Spiders fought through the cold to earn the win. Richmond improves to 23-17-1 and 9-6 in A-10 play. St. Bonaventure falls to 9-24 and 5-10 in league action.
McGuigan held the Bonnies' lineup in check in his eight innings of work. The redshirt senior scattered three hits, tied a career-high with nine strikeouts and allowed just an unearned run in his outing. Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) tossed the ninth, giving up a couple hits and two runs.
The Spider offense was led by a pair of three-hit performances from Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.). Forte finished with a pair of doubles and a home run to go with a couple runs scored and a pair of RBI. Cook drove in two and scored once with three singles. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) added a two-hit game with a single and a double and scored twice. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) made the most of his one hit, hitting a home run late in the game.
Richmond opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning in Sunday's finale. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch brought in Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) for the first run of the game. A bases loaded walk drawn by Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) drove in the second run of the inning before a Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) sacrifice fly brought in the third run to give the Spiders the 3-0 lead.
The Bonnies got on the board in the bottom of the frame, plating an unearned run. With runners on first and second, a potential double play was erased as the relay throw to first was wild, allowing a run to score to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Spiders doubled up their score in the top of the fifth. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) led off the inning with a single and scored after Forte doubled and moved to third after a throwing error. Schmidt drove in the fifth run with a sacrifice fly for the second out. Lee reignited the rally with a double to left center and Cook drove a single through the right side to bring in Lee and extend the lead to 6-1.
Solo home runs from Forte and Plantier in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively extended the lead to 9-1 for the Spiders.
The Spiders are back in action next weekend at Pitt Field as they host the George Washington Colonials in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
