RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to score two runs and force extra innings in the first game of its three-game series with the visiting George Washington Colonials Friday evening. The Spiders couldn't find an answer in the 11th after a GW home run put the Colonials up, 5-3. George Washington improves to 27-20 overall and 8-11 in Atlantic 10 play. The Spiders fall to 23-18-1 and 9-7 in league play.

The Spider offense went for 12 hits as eight of nine starters had a base knock. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) led the team with a 3-for-5 performance with a double and drove in the tying run in the ninth inning. Lead-off hitter Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) added a 2-for-6 game with an RBI and scored a run and Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) scored a run on two hits.
George Washington jumped ahead in the top of the first inning after a two-run home run from Nate Fassnacht. The Colonials added a run in the fourth inning after a lead off error came around to bite the Spiders with a Fassnacht RBI single.
The Spiders got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bruhl led off with a single back up the middle and moved up after Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) drew a walk. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) singled through the right side to bring in Bruhl for Richmond's first run of the game.
Richmond tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to start the frame and moved up to second after Schulefand knocked a single through the left side. With two outs, Bruhl brought in the first run of the inning with a single before Hipsman followed with a single of his own to tie the game.
The Colonials took the lead in the top of the 11th after a two-run homer from Noah Levin. The Spiders couldn't answer in the bottom of the frame and GW took the first game of the series.
