Baseball Wins its Fifth-Straight Behind Marcus's Complete Game
04/03/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) got the ball to start Wednesday's game with the Norfolk State Spartans and didn't allow another Spider to take the hill. Marcus worked the full 9.0 innings, striking out a career-best eight hitters as Richmond defeated the Spartans 11-1. It's the first complete game for the freshman and by a Spider pitcher since Robbie Baker closed the finale of the La Salle series a season ago with a CG. The Spiders have now won their fifth-consecutive game and are 16-9-1 on the season. Norfolk State falls to 9-16 on the season.
Marcus was efficient early as he retired the side in the first inning on just three pitches. He used a total of 96 pitches, 70 for strikes to earn his first collegiate win. He scattered five hits and allowed one run without walking a batter. He faced the minimum of three hitters in six of the nine innings, and just four over the minimum for the game.
The Spider offense backed up Marcus strong outing with some strength of their own, hitting four home runs. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Spiders with a 4-for-5 game with a pair of home runs, drove in five and scored three times. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) added a 2-for-4 game with two RBI, three runs scored and a home run of his own. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) hit his sixth homer of the season in route to finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and scoring twice. All nine starters recorded at least one hit in the contest. Freshman Robby Wacker (Greenville, N.C.) connected on his first collegiate hit in a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth inning.
The Spiders took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a run with a bases loaded walk drawn by Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) Richmond used the long ball to extend their lead in the third. A single from Plantier led the inning off before scoring after Cook homered to left for the third time this season. Forte led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the sixth after a lead off infield hit from Dionte Brown. Caleb Ward doubled to center field to drive in the run and put Norfolk State on the board.
Cook added to the lead again in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Plantier drew a walk before Forte pulled the hands through on an inside pitch to roll it through the right side for a single. Cook went the other way with an outside pitch as it landed over the wall in right field to extend Richmond's lead out to 7-1.
The Spiders added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Schulefand singled and scored on a Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) single. Plantier followed with a two-run home run. Cook singled and moved up on an error and Wacker's base hit. A wild pitch brought in the final run as the Spiders extended the lead to 11-1.
Marcus retired three-straight hitters in the ninth in the win. He ended the game retiring 10-straight hitters, four via the strikeout.
The Spiders are back in action this weekend as they hit the road for Atlantic 10 Conference play with the Rhode Island Rams in Kingston, R.I.
