Lanchbury’s Record-Setting Day Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Into Bold Territory
04/06/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team took a three-goal lead into halftime and outscored host Jacksonville 6-3 in the second half to take home a convincing 14-8 win on Saturday afternoon and move to 4-0 in Southern Conference play, alone atop the standings. The victory improves the Spiders to 7-0 all-time against the Dolphins as Saturday's game was a rematch of the 2018 Southern Conference Championship game that Richmond won in overtime.
Sophomore Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) had a career day, tying the single-game program record with six goals and tacking on an assist for a game-high seven points. Lanchbury's six goals ties the Richmond single-game record with teammate Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.), who scored six in game against High Point May 5, 2016 in the SoCon Tournament.
Lanchbury's scoring spree pushed him to 36 goals on the year, setting a new Richmond single-season record that was previously held by Hatfield (34). He has scored three or more goals in nine of 11 games this season and has scored at least four goals five times.
Sophomore Brett Randall (Brighton, N.Y.) and senior Drew Petkevich (Bethesda, Md.) also logged multi-goal games with two scores each, while Alex Morris (McLean, Va.), Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.), Ryan Lee (South Salem, N.Y.) and Patrick Shea (Oakville, Ontario) each scored once in the victory.
Lanchbury started the scoring in the fourth minute of play to jumpstart a 3-0 scoring run for the Spiders in a high-scoring opening quarter. Jacksonville scored the next two goals before Petkevich tallied his first of the day to make it a 4-2 game. Another pair of goals by the Dolphins, tied the game at 4-4 at the end of the first 15 minutes.
The Spiders broke the game open in the second quarter, out-scoring Jacksonville 4-1 in the frame. Lanchbury started the scoring just over two minutes in before Randall gave the Spiders a 6-4 lead. The Dolphins scored their lone goal of the quarter before Richmond closed with two more goals, including one from Petkevich with one second remaining in the first half for an 8-5 lead.
The Spiders kept the momentum going, scoring the first two of the third quarter from Randall and Lanchbury. After a Dolphin goal, Lanchbury added two more just 1:23 apart, securing the single-season scoring record with his tally at the 6:05 mark. Richmond scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter with Morris notching his second of the season and Lanchbury tying the school record with his sixth of the game at the 4:58 mark of the fourth. In all four quarters of the game, the Spiders scored the first two goals of each period to gain the momentum.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) came on in relief and played the final three quarters of action. Rusbuldt allowed four goals over the final 45 minutes, while making eight saves.
The Spiders conclude their four-game road stretch next Saturday with their longest trip of the season, travelling to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a SoCon meeting against Air Force. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (ET).
