Four Spiders Earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors
05/21/2019 | Baseball
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Four Spiders were earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for their performances this season. Richmond had a pair of first team All A-10 selections in third baseman Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) and outfielder Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), a second team All A-10 honoree in catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and an All-Rookie team selection in freshman Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.).
This is Plantier's first postseason Atlantic 10 award. The graduate student hit for a .337 average and was tied with Forte for the team lead with 12 home runs. Plantier drove in 49 runs, tied for eighth-most in the league. He led the team with a .576 slugging percentage and scored a team-high 45 runs in 47 games.
The postseason All-Atlantic 10 award is also the first in the career for Forte. Forte led the team with 51 RBI, ranking fifth in the conference and tied with Plantier for the third-most home runs during the season. Forte also led or was tied for the team lead in doubles (13), triples (2), home runs (12) and RBI (51). Forte is the lone Spider to have started all 51 games during the regular season, manning center field in every game.
Schmidt earned his first postseason award, earning the second team catcher award. The Texas-native was second on the team and seventh in the conference with a .356 batting average. He was second on the team with 12 doubles, hit four home runs and drove in 37 runs. His All-Conference caliber play wasn't only in the batters box, but behind the plate. The catcher committed just two errors in 342 chances, good for a .994 fielding percentage. He also caught 11 attempted base stealers and picked off a runner.
Hipsman earned All-Rookie honors after leading the team and was second in the conference with a .382 batting average in 41 games. The freshman was even better against A-10 opponents, hitting at a .453 average in 16 games. Hipsman connected on nine extra-base hits during the year, with a pair of home runs. He swiped two bases and drew 21 walks. Defensively, Hipsman recorded a perfect fielding percentage, playing mostly in left field.
