Bruhl Homers as Baseball Evens the Series with George Washington
05/04/2019 | Baseball
The freshmen tandem of Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) and Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) combined in the win on the hill. Marcus carried the bulk of the load, earning the win after going 6.1 innings, scattering nine hits, four earned runs and struck out eight on 102 pitches. Aylor closed the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit to go with a strikeout.
The Spider offense went for nine hits in the contest, led by Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Bruhl and senior catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas). That trio each had a pair of hits. Schulefand scored three times and hit Richmond's fourth triple of the season. Bruhl drove in three and scored twice to go with a double and his first home run of the season, second of his career. Schmidt drove in a pair and scored once. Cleanup hitter Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) drove in a game-high four runs on one hit in the win.
The Colonials jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Nate Fassnacht.
Richmond responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs. Schulefand ignited the rally with a triple off the wall in right and Bruhl drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A single from Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) drove in the first run of the game before a fielder's choice from Forte added the second run. Schmidt singled to bring in another run before Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) doubled. The throw to the infield was wild, allowing a second run to score on the play and the Spiders led 4-1.
Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) and Schulefand led off the second inning with a walk and a hit by pitch to start another rally. Another walk loaded the bases and Forte singled to bring in a pair. Schmidt lifted a fly ball to center field to drive in the third run of the inning.
Bruhl put an exclamation point on the first third of the game, belting a three-run home run, his first of the season, in the bottom of the third to extend the Spiders' lead to 10-1.
GW cut into the lead with back-to-back two-out doubles from Tyler Hix and Derek Ripp in the top of the sixth and plated two more in the seventh on with an RBI double from Fassnacht and a sac from Dom D'Alessandro.
The Spiders extended the lead back out to seven after Plantier was hit by a pitch and moved around to third on a couple wild pitches. Forte brought him in on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 11-4.
The Spiders and Colonials wrap up the series tomorrow at noon at Pitt Field.
