Richmond Falls On The Road At Delaware, 3-0
09/01/2019 | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team faced a tough task competing on the road with a short-handed team and fell 3-0 at Delaware Sunday afternoon at Grant Stadium.
"Full credit goes to the Delaware coaching staff and their players," head coach Marty Beall said. "They executed their game plan and unfortunately we didn't play with the intensity and focus that we had played with in our two previous games. It's a great learning experience for our young squad. I'm excited to see our growth from this game."
The Blue Hens scored three first-half goals to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. In the seventh minute, Alexis Montgomery scored her third goal of the season off a breakaway.
Delaware made it 2-0 off a penalty kick from Jessica Kennett in the 16th minute. Three minutes later, Sara D'Apoolonia fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 lead.
Junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a shot that went high in the fourth minute. Delaware native Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) had a couple of chances in the 35th minute but both her attempts were saved by keeper Kamryn Stablein.
Delaware received a red card and was forced to play the entire second half with just 10 players. Redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) finished with two shots.
The second half was a defensive battle with three combined shots. The Spiders will return home to face Elon on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m.
