Spiders Fall Short Against Elon, 3-1
09/05/2019 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team was very aggressive offensively outshooting Elon 14-9 but lost 3-1 Thursday at the President's Field at River Road.
"I thought our performance today wasn't good enough," head coach Marty Beall said. "We had some good chances and moved the ball well but our defending inside the box wasn't close to good enough. We gave them to many easy chances that they punished us for. I am excited to get back out Sunday to see how our girls respond from this."
Richmond (1-2-1) scored its lone goal in the 89th minute off a corner kick as redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) headed in her second goal of the season. Junior Olivia Tripodi (Arlington, Va.) set up the play off a corner kick and Walker scored in the final minute.
The Spiders had plenty of opportunities early in the game with seven first-half shots, including one from junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) that hit the crossbar. Senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) led the team with four shots.
Elon scored first in the 38th minute as Jasmine Bryant found Carson Jones, who scored her third goal of the season to open the scoring. Richmond entered the second half down by just one goal.
In the second half, the Phoenix added their second goal just 11 minutes after halftime as Grace Kiser scored her first goal of the season.
Elon put home their third goal of the game in the 87th minute as Sarah Bevington scored her first goal of the season. Richmond played nine substitutes in the game and a new starter on defense as redshirt freshman Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.) started in her first collegiate game.
The Spiders remain home to face American on Sunday at Noon.
