Richmond Hosts Dayton In A-10 Home Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team returns home to face Dayton in the Atlantic 10 home opener on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center.
HINDS-CLARKE STEALS LEADER IN THE A-10
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke leads the Spiders and the Atlantic 10 with 35 steals, including 10 in her last three games. Hinds-Clarke swiped four in a home win against Norfolk State, two steals against Saint Joseph's and four steals against Rhode Island. Her 35 steals are 46th in the nation.
HISTORY AGAINST DAYTON
Richmond is 10-15 all-time against the Flyers but has lost 12 games in a row dating back to the 2009-10 season. The last time Richmond won a game in the series was Feb. 18, 2009. In last year's meeting, the Flyers outscored the Spiders 27-6 in the second quarter to earn a 71-50 win in Dayton. Jaide Hinds-Clarke had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Richmond was even with Dayton in every quarter but the second. The last meeting in the Robins Center, the Spiders fell short 66-59 on Jan. 24, 2018.
HOLT ON FIRE, SCORES CAREER-HIGH AT RHODE ISLAND
Sophomore Claire Holt played a career-high 43 minutes and finished with a career-high 23 points in an overtime loss at Rhode Island on Jan. 7. Holt is averaging 16.2 points per game (81 total points) in her last five games. Holt has hit 11-for-22 (50.0 percent) from the three-point line and has dished out 11 assists. Holt is third on the team in scoring at 9.5 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond lost a heartbreaker on the road at Rhode Island, 76-70, in overtime. The Spiders forced overtime thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Claire Holt. Holt finished the game with a career-high 23 points. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz added 16 points off four three-pointers and Alex Parson scored 11 points.
The Spiders hit 10 three-pointers and came away with 13 steals but Rhode Island was able to comeback from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to take their first lead with 12 seconds to go. The Rams were led by Davida Dale who had a double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Nicole Jorgensen had 23 points and seven rebounds.
Richmond fell to 7-9 and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play with the road loss. The Spiders were in foul trouble as Jaide Hinds-Clarke and Klimkiewicz both fouled out. Rhode Island took advantage making 23-for-25 from the free throw line, including 15-for-16 from Dale.
ABOUT DAYTON
The Dayton Flyers are 9-7 and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play having won four-straight games. The Flyers opened league play with an impressive 98-58 road win at La Salle on Jan. 4. Dayton then outlasted George Mason 59-55 on Jan. 8. Erin Whalen leads the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game and leads the team with 37 made three-pointers. Jayla Scaife is second on the team at 11.3 points per game and returned from an injury against George Mason. Shakeela Fowler leads the team with 63 assists.
FREE THROW SHOOTING CONTINUES TO BE A STRENGTH
The Richmond Spiders shot 64 percent from the free throw line as a team in 2018-19. This season, Richmond is shooting 74.1 percent and is third in the Atlantic 10 and 48th nationally. The Spiders were 10-for-12 and Emma Squires was 4-for-4 at the foul line. In the loss against Saint Joseph's, the Spiders were 16-for-22 from the free throw line (72.7) and Hinds-Clarke was 6-for-7 after going 10-for-11 in her previous game.
