Spiders Drop A-10 Home Opener Against Dayton

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell behind in the second quarter and couldn't recover in a 65-51 loss against Dayton Sunday in the Atlantic 10 home opener at Robins Center.
"In the end, I thought we played pretty well defensively," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I think we played really hard but I know we can play better. That is one of the most talented teams in the league and I think we competed. We have to play better together."
Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) led the team with 15 points off 6-for-10 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama) scored 12 points after hitting 2-for-4 from the three-point line. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added eight points and six rebounds in the loss. Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) pulled down eight rebounds.
Richmond (7-10, 0-3 A-10) outrebounded Dayton 38-35 but finished the game with 24 turnovers. The Spiders shot 34.7 percent from the field (17-for-49) and missed eight free throws (10-of-18). Dayton shot 94.1 percent from the free throw line going 16-for-17. Erin Whalen led all scorers with 16 points. Jayla Scaife finished with 13 points off the bench.
The Spiders jumped out to a 18-14 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 14-4 run. Richmond was down 10-4 after a layup by Kayla Whitehead with 4:46 left in the quarter. Parson started the rally with five points in 44 seconds and Holt hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 17-12. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) hit a free throw to give Richmond a 18-14 first quarter lead.
Klimkiewicz opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to give the Spiders a seven-point advantage. Dayton would answer with a 14-0 run capped by a basket plus the foul from Araion Bradshaw. Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) stopped the run with a three-pointer to get within four at 28-24. Dayton would extend to a 10-point lead after a three-pointer by Whalen with 47 seconds left in the second quarter. Parson hit a three-pointer to keep Richmond within seven at 35-28 at halftime.
The Flyers had a strong third quarter increasing their lead to 10-points after outscoring Richmond 19-16. Dayton was 9-for-10 at the foul line in the third. Scaife scored six of her 13 points in the third quarter. Parson kept the Spiders in the game with seven points and two steals in the third quarter.
Richmond couldn't get any closer in the fourth quarter only scoring seven points off 2-for-11 shooting. Holt scored five of the seven points in the quarter. The Flyers only scored 11 points in the fourth but already had built a 10-point lead.
The Spiders will face VCU on the road in the first edition of the Sonabank Power Crosstown Showdown on Friday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m.
