Richmond Comes Up Short At VCU In SonaBank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had two chances down one in the final 30 seconds but came up just short 53-50 at VCU in the SonaBank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown Friday night at Siegel Center.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with a game-high 19 points and two rebounds. Hinds-Clarke was 8-for-11 from the field and perfect from the free throw line (3-for-3). Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added eight points and dished out six assists. Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) led the team with eight rebounds off the bench.
Richmond (7-11, 0-4 A-10) shot 41.5 percent from the field (17-for-41) and was stellar from the free throw line at 11-for-13. The Spiders finished with 11 assists and eight steals but were outrebounded 35-24. VCU improves to 9-8 and a perfect 4-0 in A-10 play.
With 40 seconds remaining, Hinds-Clarke hit two clutch free throws to give Richmond a 50-49 lead. VCU answered with a jumper in the paint from Taya Robinson with 20 seconds left. The Rams forced a stop on defense getting the ball back with seven seconds on the clock. Richmond stole the inbounds pass and raced down the court but VCU's Nyra Williams drew an offensive foul to seal the victory. Tera Reed hit two free throws and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had a last second three-pointer just miss as time expired.
Richmond was outscored 17-12 in the fourth quarter. The Spiders had an outstanding third quarter going 6-for-9 from the field and took a two-point lead into the final quarter. Richmond opened the third with a 12-1 run thanks to six points from Hinds-Clarke and five from sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.). The Spiders held VCU to just 10 points and 3-for-13 shooting in the third quarter.
The Spiders battled in the first half but trailed 26-20 on the road at VCU. Hinds-Clarke and Carpenter each had six points. Richmond committed 11 fouls in the first two quarters with four players in foul trouble at two fouls apiece. VCU was 6-for-11 from the free throw line and Richmond was 1-for-1.
In the first quarter, Richmond took a 5-4 lead after a three-pointer by junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.). The Rams built a 13-7 lead off a jumper by Kseniya Malashka with 1:35 left in the quarter. Carpenter got the Spiders within three at 13-10 after a three-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock.
The Rams took a 19-13 lead in the second quarter after a jumper by Olga Petrova with 7:06 remaining. VCU led by nine points at 26-17 before a three-point play from sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama) gave the Spiders momentum heading into halftime.
Richmond will host La Salle on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. for Kids Day at the Robins Center.
