Richmond Set For Road Test At UMass

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will carry a two-game winning streak out on the road against UMass at Mullins Center on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Noon on the NBC Sports Network.
MADELYN NEFF GIVING SPIDERS A SPARK
Sophomore Madelyn Neff has started the last two games for Richmond and has impacted the game with seven points against La Salle and a season-high nine points in the win against Davidson. Neff also went 4-for-4 at the free throw line against the Wildcats. Neff played a season-high 20 minutes against Davidson. Her 16 points in her last two games matched her total output from the previous 12 games.
ABOUT UMASS
UMass is 14-6 overall with a 4-3 Atlantic 10 record but has lost three-straight league games to Rhode Island (L, 69-66), VCU (L, 61-46) and George Washington (L, 50-47). The Minutewomen had won 11-straight games, including a 4-0 start in A-10 play before the recent losing streak. Hailey Leidel leads the team in scoring at 16.9 points per game and a team-best 56 three-pointers made. Destiney Philoxy is third on the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game. Sam Breen, a transfer from Penn State, is averaging 15.2 points per game in nine games this season.
SPIDERS NUMBERS UP FROM A SEASON AGO
Richmond was 5-15 overall after 20 games last season and are 9-11 in 2019-20. The Spiders have already earned four more wins than last season (20 games in) and are shooting a higher percentage at 39.3 compared to 32.9 in 2018-19. Richmond has hit 11 more three-pointers and has dished out 268 assists compared to just 204 last season. The Spiders are also scoring more points at 62.7 points per game after only scoring 53.0 points per game at 20 games into the season. Richmond has already tied its total win mark of 9 from 2018-19.
HISTORY AGAINST UMASS
This will be the 25th all-time meeting between the two teams with Richmond leading 20-4 in the series. Last season the teams played twice with each winning on their home floor. Richmond earned a 62-58 win on Feb. 3, 2019, after the Spiders held Hailey Leidel to seven points off 2-for-8 shooting. Jaide Hinds-Clarke earned a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. In the rematch, 24 days later, UMass held Richmond to just 38 points and cruised to a 64-38 victory. Claire Holt scored 14 points but the team only hit 3-for-18 from the three-point line. UMass hit 10 three-pointers thanks to five from Jessica George, who finished with 15 points.
HINDS-CLARKE STEALS LEADER IN THE A-10
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke leads the Spiders and the Atlantic 10 with 45 steals, including 20 in her last seven games. Hinds-Clarke swiped four in a home win against Norfolk State, two steals against Saint Joseph's and four steals against Rhode Island. Hinds-Clarke only had one steal against Dayton and VCU. She came away with three steals in the win against La Salle and tied her season-high with five steals in a win against Davidson.
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond won its second-straight Atlantic 10 game by knocking off Davidson who was previously unbeaten in league play. The Spiders outscored the Wildcats 22-10 in the fourth quarter thanks to a strong defensive effort. Richmond held Davidson to just 3-for-15 shooting from the three-point line in the final two quarters.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke had an all-around solid game with 13 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sophomore Claire Holt led the team with 14 points and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz added 12 points. Sophomore Madelyn Neff started for the second-straight game and scored a season-high nine points.
The Spiders outrebounded Davidson 39-33 and forced 19 turnovers from the Wildcats. Richmond was able to get out and run with 16 fast break points and converted 36 points in the paint.
