Balanced Effort Gives Richmond Overtime Win Against Duquesne

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had four players in double-figures, including a career-high 21 points from sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) in a 67-64 overtime win against Duquesne Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
"I thought the bench came in and gave us some great energy," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "As of late, we have been very good on the defensive end, holding a potent offense like that to 31 percent. I thought Aniyah was fantastic today and we showed a lot of heart."
Richmond (12-13, 5-6 A-10) snaps an eight-game losing streak to Duquesne in the all-time series and improves to 7-3 at the Robins Center this season. The Spiders shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) from the field and was 8-for-20 from the three-point line. Richmond moved the basketball with 16 assists and had 28 points in the paint. The Spiders bench was outstanding with 39 points, thanks to 35 coming from Carpenter and freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.).
Chapman earned her second double-double of the season with a career-high 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Madelyn Neff (Hayward, Wis.) secured her first double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Carpenter was the difference with 21 points off 9-for-14 shooting and was 3-for-6 from the three-point line. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) added 11 points, scoring in double-figures for the seventh-straight game.
Richmond held Duquesne to just 31.9 percent shooting (22-for-69) and only 23.8 percent (5-for-21) from the three-point line. The Spiders were running the floor with 17 fast break points and Duquesne only had two.
In overtime, the Spiders quickly took a 56-55 lead after a three-pointer by Carpenter with 4:08 left in the game. Duquesne answered with two free throws but Chapman scored off a layup to give Richmond a 58-57 lead. Carpenter made back-to-back baskets to make the score 62-59. The Spiders built a 65-61 lead with 38 seconds left and Amaya Hamilton hit a three-pointer to cut Richmond's lead to 65-64 with 21 seconds remaining. The Dukes had a chance to take the lead but missed a layup with three seconds left. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) hit two free throws and Richmond forced a missed three-pointer at the buzzer.
The game went into overtime after Richmond made a couple of key defensive stops late in the fourth quarter. Duquesne lead 49-46 with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter. Carpenter hit a jumper to cut the lead to 49-48 but Hamilton hit two free throws to push the lead back to 51-48. Neff drained a clutch three-pointer with 3:54 on the clock but Duquesne regained the lead off a basket from Laia Sole. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) made a tough layup with 1:36 on the clock to tie the game at 53-53. Both teams had chances in the final minute but neither could find the game-winning basket.
The Spiders for the second-straight game had a great third quarter outscoring Duquesne 15-8 to cut the Dukes lead to one point after three quarters. Richmond held Duquesne to just 3-for-14 shooting in the third quarter and forced six turnovers. Holt had five points in the third and Chapman scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in the third.
Richmond made a rally in the second quarter outscoring Duquesne, 19-16, but still trailed 34-26 after two quarters. Carpenter scored 10 points off 4-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-2 from the three-point line. Neff added seven points and four rebounds.
The Spiders fell behind early as Duquesne scored the first 10 points. Richmond answered with a 7-3 run to cut the Dukes lead to 13-7 off a three-pointer from Carpenter. Duquesne ended the first quarter with a 5-0 run, including two free throws by Precious Johnson.
In the second quarter, Richmond got within eight points after another three-pointer by Carpenter with 6:13 on the clock. The Spiders got closer after a driving layup from Klimkiewicz made the score 26-19. Each team would score seven points to give the Dukes a 34-26 lead after two quarters.
Richmond will continue the home stand and host Fordham for Alumni day and Pink day on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center.
