Spiders Fall to A-10 Defending Champion Fordham

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team played a tough third quarter and never recovered in a 64-47 home loss against the Atlantic 10 defending champion Fordham on Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.
"Credit to Fordham's coaching staff and their players as they pressured the right people and put us in some tough situations," head coach Aaron Roussell. "I was excited for our players to play in such a big game but unfortunately sometimes you have to fail to gain experience in these types of games."
Richmond (12-14, 5-7 A-10) shot 37.8 percent from the field and hit 6-for-14 from the three-point line but 27 turnovers proved to be costly. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) scored 10 points and added two steals. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter off two three-pointers.
Fordham was led by Kendell Heremaia who had a double-double off a career-high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Heremaia couldn't miss shooting 12-for-17 from the field and hit 5-for-9 from the three-point line. The Atlantic 10 conference leading scorer Bre Cavanaugh was held to just 11 points and 3-for-18 shooting and had to make two free throws in the fourth quarter to extend her double-figure scoring streak to 22 games.
Fordham closed the end of the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 29-27 lead into halftime. Kendell Heremaia led the way for the Rams with 18 points after two quarters. Hinds-Clarke had a great two quarters scoring 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Spiders took a 3-2 lead after a three-pointer by Hinds-Clarke with 9:09 left in the first quarter. Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) made back-to-back buckets to give Richmond a 9-6 lead. The Spiders led for most of the first quarter and took a 16-15 lead after Megan Jonassen made a layup with 22 seconds left.
Hinds-Clarke continued to have an impact in the second quarter going on a 5-0 run herself capped by a layup to give the Spiders a 23-18 lead. Heremaia wouldn't miss hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to 25-24. The Rams hit five three-pointers in the first half with four coming from Heremaia. Parson added nine points and 4-for-4 shooting for Richmond.
The Rams opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to open up a 36-27 lead and never looked back. Fordham would outscore Richmond, 21-9, in the third quarter and scored 10 points off turnovers. Fordham would increase its two-point halftime lead to a 50-36 lead after three quarters. Richmond shot just 2-for-8 in the quarter and had seven turnovers.
The Spiders tried to make a run in the fourth quarter by hitting a couple of three-pointers as Holt and Klimkiewicz hit back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 56-44 with 3:08 remaining. Klimkiewicz hit another three to cut the lead to 58-47 but Fordham responded with the next six points to end the game at 64-47.
Richmond will head to Fairfax, Virginia for a matchup against George Mason on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m.
