Spiders Earn Tough Road Win At George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team got one final stop and held on for a 75-70 road win at George Mason Wednesday night at EagleBank Arena. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) scored a career-high 24 points and senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with 21 points.
"A lot of great things from our program today," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I am really proud of how we ended the game. How we started the game was some of the best basketball we have played this year. I thought we were fantastic on the offensive end all night to have 75 points in a road game speaks to how far we have come."
Richmond (13-14, 6-7 A-10) picks up its sixth Atlantic 10 win of the season after a thrilling fourth quarter leading to a five-point victory. Holt's career-high 24 points included a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Holt made the final four free throws to clinch the win. Hinds-Clarke set a new A-10 personal high for points with 21 and was 9-for-10 from the field.
Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) finished with 16 points and was 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The Spiders needed every free throw shooting 78.3 percent (18-for-23). Richmond shot 49.0 percent from the field (25-for-51) and 7-for-18 from the three-point line.
With one-minute left in the game, Holt hit two free throws to give Richmond a 71-67 lead. George Mason answered with a three-pointer by Jordan Wakefield to make the score 71-70. The Patriots got two chances to take the lead in the final seconds but sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) grabbed the rebound. Holt hit four free throws after an intentional foul and technical foul was called to end the game.
The Spiders led 33-28 at halftime after a strong first quarter and nine points from Hinds-Clarke. Richmond got off to a fast start scoring the first eight points of the game and forced a George Mason timeout. With 6:01 left in the first quarter, the Spiders led 15-2 off a three-pointer by Klimkiewicz. Richmond continued to lead by 13 points after a layup by Hinds-Clarke made the score 19-6. The Patriots ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run to get within nine at 21-12.
In the second quarter, George Mason tied the game at 27-27 after a 15-6 run. Jacy Bolton hit-back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game. The Spiders went back in front after jumpers from Parson and Holt. Hinds-Clarke made a jumper with 38 seconds left in the quarter to give Richmond a 33-28 halftime lead.
The Spiders jumped ahead in the third quarter off a quick 9-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by Hinds-Clarke to make the score 42-28. With 5:37 on the clock in the third quarter, Hinds-Clarke made a layup to give Richmond a 15-point lead at 47-34. George Mason would outscore the Spiders 10-8 to cut the lead to 55-44 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, the Patriots went on a 20-10 run to get within one point at 65-64 off a layup by Nicole Cardano-Hillary. George Mason kept fighting getting within one score multiple times but Richmond didn't give the lead up. Holt hit all eight free throws in the final two minutes of the game. Cardano-Hillary led George Mason with 23 points but took 22 shots in the process.
The Spiders never trailed in a wire-to-wire win and outscored George Mason 26-20 in the paint. Richmond will travel to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.
