Spiders Drop Heartbreaker Against Saint Louis On Senior Night

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team held a one-point lead with 16 seconds left but fell short against Saint Louis, 60-57, Wednesday night on Senior Night at the Robins Center. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) scores her third-straight 20-point game with 20 points and five rebounds.
"I thought our kids battled today and I am really proud of them," head coach Aaron Roussell. "This shows a lot about what this team is and how far this team has come these last couple of months."
Richmond (14-15, 7-8 A-10) outscored Saint Louis 16-14 in the fourth quarter but had a couple of late turnovers to not get a final shot off to tie. The Spiders shot 46.0 percent from the field (23-for-50) and 7-for-17 from the three-point line (41.2 percent. Hinds-Clarke led the way with 20 points off 8-for-12 shooting. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) finished with nine points off the bench with five rebounds.
Saint Louis improved to 17-11 and 9-6 in Atlantic 10 play. Three players finished in double figures with senior Kendra Wilken scoring 15 points. Myriama Smith Traore grabbed 16 rebounds but Richmond held Ciaja Harbison to just 3-for-16 shooting.
In the final minute, sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) scored off a layup to give Richmond a 55-54 lead with 1:01 on the clock. Saint Louis hit two free throws to go back up 56-55 before Holt answered again with a layup with 20 seconds left to make it 57-56. The Billikens were awarded two more free throws to go back in front 58-57. With seven seconds left, Richmond missed a jumper and Wilken hit two free throws to give Saint Louis a 60-57 lead. The Spiders committed two late turnovers and didn't get a chance for a game-tying shot.
Saint Louis outrebounded Richmond 38-30, including 17 offensive rebounds. The Spiders had a tough night shooting at the free throw line going 4-for-11. Richmond did have 24 points off the bench but was held to just three fast break points.
Richmond trailed 28-24 after two quarters against Saint Louis. Hinds-Clarke led the team with eight points off 3-for-5 shooting. The Spiders had a solid first quarter outscoring Saint Louis, 17-11, but only scored seven in the second quarter. The Billikens held Richmond scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second quarter. The Spiders were able to fight back and score seven points in the final 2:34.

Hinds-Clarke hit another three-pointer to push the lead to 13-7 and sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) hit a layup to make it 15-7. Richmond held a 17-11 lead after one quarter.
Saint Louis increased its lead to five points after three quarters. The Billikens held their largest lead at 40-27 before sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) hit a three-pointer to stop the run. Richmond went on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 44-38 after a free throw from sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.). Harbison hit a jumper before Klimkiewicz hit a deep three-pointer at the third quarter buzzer to make the score 46-41.
The final quarter saw six lead changes and five ties with no team holding a lead larger than five.
The Spiders will finish the A-10 regular season with a road game at George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m.
