Baseball Drops Back and Forth Battle with Georgetown
02/28/2020 | Baseball
Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started on the hill. The redshirt junior threw 3.0 innings, allowing four hits, five earned runs and struck out five. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) came on and threw 3.0 innings in relief, with five strikeouts and surrendered just one unearned run. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) worked 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and striking out a pair. James Hulbert (Harrison, N.Y.) threw 1.1 innings, allowing a run, walked three and struck out two. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) suffered the loss, throwing 0.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and a strikeout. Theo Farynick (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) finished the tenth inning on six pitches.
At the plate, the Spiders finished with 12 hits, led by a pair of four-hit games from Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.). Leckie drove in a pair and scored once, Mathes added an RBI. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) added a two-hit performance. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in two runs on a double. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) each scored a pair of runs.
The Spiders jumped out to an early lead, plating six runs in the bottom of the first. Schulefand reached with a hit by pitch and moved up after Little dropped down a bunt single. A wild pitch moved the two up for Toso who drove a double to right field to plate the first two runs. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Leckie drove another double, bringing in two more. Mathes singled through the right side to score another and move Leckie to third. Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) lifted a fly ball to right for a sac fly and brought in Leckie to extend the lead to 6-0.
Georgetown hung a crooked number of their own in the top of the third, scoring five times. A walk, followed by four-straight hits pushed three across and a bases loaded walk added the fourth run. With the bases loaded, an infield fly rule brought one in before a strikeout ended the Hoya rally. The Hoyas tied it up in the fifth inning, plating an unearned run on a sacrifice fly.
Richmond got back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to Blakely's first homer as a Spider, a solo shot to left. Georgetown tied it up in the top of the ninth, using a bases loaded walk to knot it at seven.
Georgetown broke open the tie in the top of the tenth inning, using a single and two walks to load the bases, Ryan M. Davis connected on a grand slam to clear the bases and go up 11-7.
Richmond scored in the bottom of the tenth on a balk, and had the tying run at the plate before the rally was foiled by the Georgetown pitching staff.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow as they host the Wagner Seahawks at noon at Pitt Field.
