Toso and Mathes Homer in Loss to Wagner
02/29/2020 | Baseball
Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) started on the mound. The redshirt sophomore threw 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs and struck out six before suffering the loss. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) was first on in relief, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out a pair. Matt Olson (Smyrna, Ga.) threw the final 0.2, allowing a hit with a strikeout.
The Spider offense was paced by a pair of three-hit games from Toso and Mathes. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) added a double, with Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) each connecting on singles.
The Spiders jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Schulefand led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third after Little dropped down a bunt single. Toso drove a single down the first baseline to drive in Schulefand and Little moved to third on the play. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) brought in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right. Hipsman drove a single to right field where it was mishandled, allowing Toso to score and Hipsman to take third. Mathes drove a single to center to bring in Hipsman and put the Spiders up 4-0.
Wagner tied it up with a four-run rally of their own the next half inning. Two walks and two singles brought in the first run and loaded the bases. A fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt allowed the third run to score and a sacrifice fly to center field let the tying run in to knot the contest at four.
Toso put the Spiders back in front with his third home run of the season, lifting this to right center for the solo homer.
The Seahawks took advantage of a couple Spider miscues to plate a pair of unearned runs and take the 6-5 lead after four. In the sixth, a lead-off walk and a double brought in the run to extend the lead back to 7-5.
Mathes connected on his first Spider homer in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead back down to one before Wagner responded with a two-run homer of its own in the top of the seventh.
Richmond is back in action tomorrow at noon as it hosts the West Virginia Mountaineers at noon at Pitt Field.
