Spiders Drop Rematch Against VCU In SonaBank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown
02/05/2020 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had a tough second quarter and a tough night shooting in a 57-42 loss against VCU Wednesday night in the rematch of the Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown at the Robins Center.
"I think they did a really good job making things difficult for us," head coach Aaron Roussell. "I thought we found some new energy the last 15 minutes but unfortunately for us it just wasn't our night shooting the basketball. We have to learn a lot from today and keep getting better."
Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) led the team with 16 points and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) had eight points off the bench on 3-for-4 shooting. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Hinds-Clarke, with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, became the 25th member of the 1,000-career points club.
Richmond (10-13, 3-6 A-10) finished the game shooting 28.8 percent (15-for-52) and was outrebounded 38-33 in the game. The Spiders did hold VCU to just 18.2 percent from the field in the fourth quarter off 2-for-11 shooting.
The Spiders got off to a fast start by outscoring VCU, 17-12, in the first quarter. The Rams took a 6-5 lead off two free throws by Tera Reed with 6:17 left in the first quarter. Richmond went on an 8-0 run capped off by a three-point play by Carpenter. The Spiders built the lead to 17-10 after back-to-back layups from Hinds-Clarke and Holt.
In the second quarter, VCU would open with a 13-3 run to open up a 24-20 lead after three-pointers from K.K. Tassin and Madison Hattix-Covington. The Rams continue to push the lead with a strong end to the second quarter off a 10-1 run. VCU finished the second quarter outscoring Richmond 24-7 and turned a first quarter deficit into a 12-point halftime lead.
The Rams scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 43-24 lead. The Spiders answered back by outscoring VCU 9-4 the rest of the quarter. Holt went 3-for-4 from the free throw line and freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) had a basket.
In the final quarter, Richmond couldn't get any closer scoring only nine points but did hold VCU to just 10 points. VCU finished the game with 24 points off turnovers and had 26 points in the paint. Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) led the team with three steals. The Rams length was a big factor at the rim with nine blocks, including three from Danielle Hammond.
Richmond will head to Philadelphia for the third time this season (at Saint Joseph's, at Drexel) for a rematch against La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m.
