Strong Third Quarter Propels Richmond Over La Salle, 67-61

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team scored 23 points in the third quarter and earned an important road win at La Salle, 67-61, Sunday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.
"A fantastic win for this group and we showed a lot of heart today," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I think we really regrouped in the second half and we moved the basketball resulting in some threes. It was really fun to watch, I felt the bench's energy and I am really proud of the effort."
Richmond (11-13, 4-6 A-10) sweeps the season series with La Salle and holds an important tiebreaker over the Explorers. The Spiders finished the game shooting 38.5 percent (25-for-65) and hit 7-for-18 from the three-point line. Richmond had 11 steals in the victory, including three from senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.).
Four players finished in double-figures with sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) leading the way with 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hinds-Clarke earned her 12th career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added 12 points with nine rebounds. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored 11 points off the bench.
La Salle opened the third quarter with a 5-1 run to build a 10-point lead at 35-25 with 7:53 left on the clock. Richmond took a timeout and immediately went on a quick 7-0 run off a three-pointer by Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) and two layups from Hinds-Clarke. The run (15-1) would continue as the Spiders would take a 40-36 lead off a three-pointer by Hinds-Clarke. Richmond outscored La Salle, 23-13, in the third quarter, including 22-8 to end it.
The Spiders remained hot in the fourth quarter scoring the first four points and forcing a timeout by La Salle. With 5:46 left, Holt hit a three-pointer to give Richmond a 54-45 lead. La Salle wouldn't go away as a 5-0 run cut the lead to 54-52 after a layup from Shalina Miller. Kayla Spruill cut the lead to two points again at 58-56 with 1:57 remaining. The dagger came with under a minute left when Parson drained a three-pointer to push the lead to 63-58. The Spiders hit free throws in the end to finish the win 67-61.
The Spiders gave up 19 points in the second quarter to trail 30-24 at La Salle. Richmond outscored La Salle 15-11 in the first quarter. Holt finished with 11 points off 5-for-10 shooting in the first two quarters.
Kayla Spruill scored the first seven points of the game for the Explorers but Richmond answered with a 7-0 run off five points from Holt. The Spiders ended the first quarter outscoring La Salle, 15-4, capped off by a layup inside by freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.).
In the second quarter, La Salle opened with a couple of three-pointers as Jordon Lewis and Kate Hill tied the game at 17-17. Claire Jacobs hit back-to-back three-pointers to give La Salle a 23-21 lead. The Explorers would hit five three-pointers in the second quarter leading to a six-point halftime lead. The Spiders had nine points in the second quarter and didn't attempt a three-pointer.
The Spiders had 32 points in the paint and converted 25 points off turnovers. Richmond will return home to face Duquesne on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Robins Center.
