RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season and was looking to make a statement to start the season, but the Spiders suffered a 14-13 double overtime loss to No. 4 Maryland Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,089 fans at Robins Stadium. Maryland out-scored the Spiders 6-2 in the fourth quarter to force extra time and the Terrapins got the game-winning goal after 5:48 of tense scoreless play in overtime had expired to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Connell added an assist in the second half to finish with four points in his collegiate debut.

Connell added two goals in the second half while Savoca and Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) each found the net.
Richmond extended its lead in the second half, taking a five-goal lead at 12-7 when senior Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) scored on a man-up opportunity early in the fourth quarter. The Terrapins started to chip away at the deficit, scoring four-straight to narrow the gap to 12-11 with 7:04 remaining.
Gallagher would give the Spiders a two-goal cushion with a tally with 5:16 remaining but Maryland kept coming and tied the game with two-straight from Bernhardt, including the tying goal with 1:41 remaining. Both teams had chances in the closing seconds but were unable to find the back of the net.
