03/10/2020 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior infielder Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) made his presence felt from the very beginning of Tuesday night's contest with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Toso hit a pair of home runs in the contest as he helped the Spiders secure a 6-4 victory. Richmond improves to 4-12 on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 7-11.
Toso led the offense with his 3-for-4 performance. To go with a pair of home runs, Toso also singled, stole a base, drove in three and scored three times. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) added a 2-for-4 game with a double, an RBI and scored twice. The Spider offense went for nine hits in the contest with three others adding base hits.
On the mound, Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) earned the first win of his career. The freshman threw 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs and struck out a pair. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) was the first reliever used. The sophomore threw a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) added a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts before Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) came in from center field to close it out, throwing a scoreless ninth, also with a pair of strikeouts to earn the first save of his career.
Richmond got the scoring started in the first inning as Toso went deep to center field with two outs to take an early lead. The Spiders pushed across two more runs in the top of the third. Schulefand dropped down a bunt single before coming around to score when Mathes doubled down the first base line. Mathes came in on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.
Charleston Southern tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, a walk and a single put two on for the Buccaneer catcher who doubled down the right field line to bring CSU within one. The Charleston Southern shortstop dropped a single to left to bring in the third run of the inning to tie it up at three.
The Spiders responded in the top of the fifth as another bunt single put a runner on, and this time it was Toso leaving the yard for the second time of the game, launching a two-run shot to left to get the lead back to 5-3.
The Buccaneers cut the lead down to one in the bottom of the sixth inning after a leadoff double came around to score on an RBI ground out.
The top of the eighth saw Richmond add an insurance run as Toso led off with a single and swiped second before coming around to score on a pair of ground outs.
Schulefand came on and threw a scoreless ninth to secure the victory.
Richmond and the Buccaneers are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as the Spiders finish up their week in Charleston with the final game of the road trip.
