03/07/2020 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Richmond baseball's comeback attempt against a tough Ball State pitching staff fell short Saturday night at Shipyard Park in Charleston. The Spiders scored the tying run in the top of the ninth before giving up the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Richmond falls to 3-11 on the season, while Ball State improves to 5-9.
Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) got the start on the mound. The redshirt sophomore threw 7.0 innings, striking out seven and scattering five hits. Jarrad DeLarso (Malvern, Pa.) worked 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) suffered the loss, throwing 0.2 innings, allowing the game-winning run in the tenth.
The Spider offense knocked out five hits in the contest, led by a 2-for-5 effort from Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.). Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) had a single with an RBI, with Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) each recorded hits in the game. Richmond drew six walks, led by Daniel Little's (Nicholasville, Ky.) three walks.
Ball State struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Noah Navarro singled up the middle and was off with the pitch with Trenton Quartermaine drove a double off the wall in right to bring in the first run of the afternoon.
Richmond tied it up in the top of the ninth inning. A single, a fielder's choice on a bunt and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the top of the order. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) singled through the left side to score the tying run, but the winning run was thrown out trying to score from second after falling down between third and home.
The bottom of the tenth saw Ball State drive in the game-winning run with a bases loaded single to deep centerfield.
The Spider are back in action tomorrow as they close out the Swig and Swine Classic with a matchup with the Yale Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
