Baseball Falls to Yale in the Finale of the Swig and Swine Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Spider baseball dropped its final game of the Swig and Swine Classic Sunday afternoon as the Spiders took on the Yale Bulldogs of the Ivy League. The Spiders finished the weekend 1-2, defeating Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night, falling to Ball State in extra innings last night and suffering the 12-3 loss today. Richmond is now 3-12 on the year, while Yale improves to 3-6.

Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started on the hill, tossing 4.0 innings, giving up six hits, six earned runs and struck out seven. James Hulbert (Harrison, N.Y.) threw 0.2 innings, allowing two runs before giving way to Matt Olson (Smyrna, Ga.). Olson worked the next 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Peyton Sanderson (Austin, Texas) worked 1.2 innings allowing three hits and two earned runs to go with a pair of strikeouts. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) came on to finish it out, throwing 1.1 innings with a walk and striking out three hitters.

The Spider offense knocked out seven base hits in the contest, all by different hitters. Schulefand, Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.), Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.), Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.), Ricky Jones (Hopewell, Va.), and Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) all recorded hits. Hipsman and Jones went for extra bases with a triple and double, respectively.

Yale jumped on the Spiders early, plating two runs each in the first and second innings, followed by a solo homer in the third to go up 5-0 after the first three innings of play.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the top of the fifth as they took advantage of five free passes to plate three runs.

Richmond got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leckie led off and was hit by a pitch before stealing his way to third base. Ready dropped a single into centerfield to drive in Leckie and get the Spiders on the board.

After Yale scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, the Spiders scored another run in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to put a runner on. A single moved him into scoring position and Blakely drove a single to left to bring in Schaub.

Yale responded with two more runs before Leckie led off the eighth with a single and scored on Hipsman's triple to right center.

The Spiders return to the diamond on Tuesday as they will stay in Charleston to take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers at 6 p.m.
