DULUTH, Ga. -- Freshman Cole Ekert birdied his final hole to shoot a 1-under par 71 in the final round of the Georgia State Invitational Tuesday at Berkeley Hills Country Club. Ekert's 71 was two shots better than any other Spider Tuesday as Richmond combined for a team score of 294 (+6) to finish the 15-team event tied for 11th at 874 (+10).Â
"I just tried to be a bit smarter than the first two rounds," said Ekert, who shot 74 (+2) and 77 (+5) in the event's first two rounds Monday. "I aimed for center of greens, missed in the right spots around the greens, and avoided three putts. It was boring golf, but it allowed me to avoid making many bogeys."Â
Ekert made just one bogey Tuesday while managing a pair of birdies and 15 pars. As a team, Richmond was hurt by six double bogeys in Round 3, all coming on the front 9.Â
The Spiders were tightly packed on the individual leaderboard, finishing the event within three shots of each other. Junior Lou Baker tied for 36th at 219 (+3), one shot in front of senior Michael Childress and sophomore Garrett Clark, who tied for 41st at 220 (+4). Junior Ben Cooper was one shot further back in 47th place at 221 (+5). Ekert tied for 48th in the field of 87 at 222 (+6).Â
Richmond registered 183 pars during the event, second most in the field, but was unable to adequately take advantage of the par 5s at Berkely Hills. The Spiders combined to play the par 5s in 2-under par, better than only Bellarmine (+1) and Florida A&M (+3) in the field of 15.Â
The Spiders will wrap up their fall season on October 23-24 at the Grandover Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
