Jones Named Patriot League Golfer of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond's Lauren Jones has been named Patriot League Golfer of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday. Jones, a freshman, was honored for her runner-up finish at this week's Navy Fall Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Jones shot 73-72/145 (+1) to finish second in the field of 76.Â
Jones' performance helped spur the Spiders to the team title, their first in any tournament since 2019 and their first in a tournament with more than six teams since 2017. Richmond's 36-hole score of 607 (+31) matched Sacred Heart for the lowest of any of the 13 teams in the event and the Spiders won the championship tiebreaker due to a lower score by their fifth team member in the final round.Â
Jones became the first Spider to finish first or second in a tournament with 70 or more competitors since 2017, when Elsa Diaz won the Boston College Intercollegiate. She is the fifth active Spider to win a Patriot League Golfer of the Week award, joining seniors Naomi Mitchell and Emily Ward, junior Vicky Zhu, and sophomore Rory Weinfurther.Â
The Richmond women's golf team has one event remaining in its fall season. The Spiders will compete in the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in Rehoboth Beach, Del. on October 16-17.Â
