02/27/2021 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 18 University of Richmond men's lacrosse team rallied from a four-goal second half deficit Saturday afternoon picking up the Spiders' first win of 2021 with a come-from-behind 11-10 victory over visiting Towson at Robins Stadium. The Spiders out-scored the Tigers 5-1 in the fourth quarter in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Freshman attack Luke Grayum (Ardmore, Pa.) posted his first career hat trick, leading seven different Spider scorers in the victory. Senior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and attack Kevin Todd (Collegeville, Pa.) each added a pair of goals in the victory.
Richmond (1-2) trailed by four goals at 9-5 with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter after Towson (2-3) scored seven-straight in a span of 10:25 of the quarter. The Spiders got a big goal to change the momentum with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter when Grayum scored an unassisted goal off a strong move narrowing the gap to 9-6.
Face-off specialist Andrew Hamilton (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) went on a run as the Spiders scored three goals in a span of 1:28 of the fourth quarter, quickly tying the game with 12:20 remaining. Senior Brett Randall (Brighton, N.Y.) scored his first of the season before Grayum tallied his third of the game to pull Richmond within one goal just 45 seconds later.
Savoca tied the game 43 seconds later, taking a feed from sophomore Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) knotting the score at 9-9. Young would follow with his first of the game with 7:14 remaining, giving the Spiders back the lead for good. Sophomore Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) scored a big goal unassisted 48 seconds after Young's, giving the Spiders a much needed insurance goal.
Towson would score with 2:05 remaining on a Brody McLean goal but would get no further as the Spiders forced a turnover and were able to run the clock down securing the win.
The fourth quarter comeback was needed despite the Spiders out-scoring the Tigers 5-2 in the first half. Todd scored both of his goals in the first half in his first start of the season. Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) added a tally for his 97th career goal, moving him into sole possession of third place all-time in program history. He surpassed former Spider J.P. Forrester with the goal and is just four behind second place held by Mitch Goldberg.
Graduate goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) finished the game with 13 saves in the victory. Hamilton led the team with nine ground balls as he was 11-of-19 on face-offs while senior Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The Spiders conclude their four-game home stretch to open the year Sunday, March 7 when they welcome in No. 1 Duke to Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
