#16 Men’s Lacrosse Falls To #1 Duke Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – The 16th ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team closed out its four-game home stretch to begin the season Sunday afternoon as the Spiders suffered a 13-6 defeat to No. 1 Duke at Robins Stadium. The loss was the third of the season by the Spiders to teams ranked in the top 10 of the country falling to 1-3 on the year while Duke improves to 6-0.
 
Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) posted his first hat trick of the season in the loss and became just the third Spider to reach the 100-career goal mark. Lanchbury joins Teddy Hatfield (123) and Mitch Goldberg (101) in the exclusive club, finishing the game with a game-high 10 shots and four points. Senior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist, while freshman Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Matt Civitella (Paoli, Pa.) each scored their first career goals.
 
The Spiders out-shot Duke by a 39-34 margin in the loss and won 11-of-23 face-offs. Duke goalie highlighted the day with a game-high 15 saves to backstop the tough Blue Devil defense. Michael Sowers led the top-ranked Blue Devils with a game-high five points, scoring three goals and adding a pair of assists.
 
Duke scored the first four goals of the game before Lanchbury tallied his first of the game making it a 4-1 contest at the end of the first quarter. The Spiders pulled within 5-3 as Lanchbury and Shoults scored midway through the second quarter, but Duke scored the next six goals to break the game open at 11-3.
 
Madonna stopped the run with his first career goal and Lanchbury tallied his 100th goal early in the fourth making it an 11-5 contest. After Sowers' third goal, Civitella scored his first career goal in transition as the Spiders forced one of the 15 turnovers by the Blue Devils on the afternoon.
 
Richmond opens up Southern Conference play next weekend with its first road game of the year. The Spiders will head across the state to face-off against VMI at noon in the first of two-straight on the road in league play.
