Baseball Scores Five in the Sixth to Defeat VMI
03/06/2021 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Spider baseball used a big inning in the bottom of the sixth to break open a tie game and cruised to a 10-3 win over the visiting VMI Keydets Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. With the Spiders and Keydets tied at three, Richmond scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and rode a superb bullpen effort to earn the win. The Spiders improve to 5-1 on the year, VMI falls to 2-5.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started on the hill. The right-hander threw 5.0 innings, striking out 10 hitters, allowing one earned run on two hits before giving way to the bullpen. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) earned the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings, striking out four without allowing a run. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) came on in the ninth, getting the one hitter he faced to line out on two pitchers to secure the win.
The Spider offense was led by Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.). Each had three hits, Ciufo's was the loudest as he hit his first Spider home run to tie the game in the second inning. Blakely scored once. Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a 1-for-4 game, driving in two and scoring a run. Eight of nine starters earned a base hit in the contest.
VMI struck first in the top of the first inning. The Keydets used a hit batter and two walks to load the bases before Callen Nuccio dropped a single to right that skipped past the right fielder and rolled to the wall, allowing three to score.
Richmond answered in the bottom of the second. Blakely singled with two strikes to start the rally and moved up on a Leckie single. Ciufo hammered a 2-1 pitch to the scoreboard in left center to tie the game at three each.
The Spiders broke open the tie game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. A fielding error allowed Forte to reach base and start the rally. Sprague-Lott connected on his first career hit, a triple down the right field line to score one. After a hit by pitch put Schulefand on, he stole second and a sacrifice fly brought in Sprague-Lott. Masel drove in two more when he doubled to right and the Spiders took the lead 8-3.
Richmond added solo runs in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth. Sprague-Lott drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right center, and the Spiders scored another when Forte singled up the middle to bring in Masel.
The Spiders are back in action on Monday as they host the Central Michigan Chippewas at Pitt Field. That game will be streamed on ESPN+.
