RICHMOND, Va. – Spider baseball dropped its first home game of the season Monday afternoon as the Spiders hosted the Central Michigan Chippewas at Pitt Field by a 10-2 score. The Spiders fall to 5-2 on the season, while Central Michigan improves to 3-4.
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga.) started for the Spiders on the hill. The grad transfer worked 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, two earned and struck out one while picking up the loss. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) was the first arm out of the bullpen. He saw four hitters before giving way to Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.). Balducci worked 1.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) worked in relief of Balducci, facing three hitters. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) finished it out, throwing the final 3.1 innings, striking out two hitters, allowing one run.
The Spider offense knocked out eight hits in the loss. Schulefand finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) went 1-for-5 in the lead-off spot with an RBI double. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) all had one hit.
Central Michigan didn't waste time to get on the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the first inning. The Chippewa leadoff hitter reached and advanced on a throwing error before moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a sacrifice fly to deep center field. The Chippewas doubled up their lead in the fourth inning, pushing a run in on a bases loaded walk.
The Chippewas added to their lead in the top of the fifth, after a lead-off double, CMU followed with a walk, a single and another double to plate two. Central Michigan took advantage of some free passes, before a double play and an attempted bunt single were snuffed out by the Richmond defense as CMU took a 6-0 lead.
The Spiders answered in the bottom of the fifth to plate a pair. Schulefand led off with a double to left field and scored when Rinaldi rolled a double to the wall in right center. Rinaldi later scored on a Masel single to cut the lead by a third.
Central Michigan responded the next half inning, scoring three more runs by virtue of a bases loaded hit by pitch and two bases loaded walks. CMU added another run in the ninth with an RBI single.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow evening as they head to Charlottesville for a matchup with the Cavaliers at 3 p.m.
